FAMILY SOCIAL ECONOMIC STATUS (FSES)
A family is a social, spiritual and economic unit of a community or society or nation. Therefore, every family needs to be strengthened, supported and equipped to be socially, economically and spiritually sound for it to be positively productive to its society or community. Social Economic Statuses of families have an influence in their societies’ economy. A strong, reliable and resilient economy is one that is strongly built at family level and up to community and institutional levels.
Parents
and guardians should plan and work hard to raise and build the social economic
statuses of their families. The positive social economic status of a family is
good tool and vehicle for parents and guardians in managing their homes and
child-nurturing. In most cases, low family social economic statuses have led to
harsh and negative parenting of children. Social economic status of parents and
guardians or family has impact and influence on its family members, positively
or negatively. When positive, it may be empowering or provide opportunities of
growth to family members.
Social Economic Statuses of families affect the development outcomes of children or family members. They are a support to parenting practices of parents and guardians. Mostly children from families that are stricken by poverty or that lack appropriate resources become victims of violence, abuse, injustice and exploitation. On the other hand, children from productive and stable families whose social economic statuses are good, have high potential of participating in and contributing to development in their societies and nations. This is a sad truth about the disparities between children from poor families and those of stable families in terms of parenting, access to opportunities and resilience to life challenges for survival.
FAMILY
RESOURCES
Family resources could be the
following:
(a)
Material
Resources e.g., money, possessions, assets, land, shelter
(b)
Human
Resources e.g., knowledge, skills, talents, good health (of a person)
(c)
Time
The family should be trained in how
to develop or acquire, protect, and manage well and effectively the use of the
above resources for the benefit of all family members and their communities.
Family resources should
not be wasted but should be guarded, well managed and utilised correctly for
the benefit of the family. If the purpose and benefits of the family resources
are not fully understood by family members, abuse is likely to happen.
Resources empower parents and guardians to provide protection to their children
and provide for their needs. This strengthens family relationships.
Family resources should
be managed by family members. The family members should be sensitised, educated
and trained to protect, guard and manage well the family resources. The family
should know that their resources are for their own good and that they help to
meet family needs like food, shelter, clothes, and education, and enhance their
access to health services.
