FAMILY REGULATION

Family regulation is another important aspect which provides a framework of operation, discipline, decision-making and general guidance. Children that are trained, educated, disciplined and motivated to follow family rules are more likely to adhere to rules outside their families, learning institutions, and later in life, at their work places and in communities. They will adhere to the rule of law in their countries because they were brought up that way and they will value this. Family regulation should not be harsh and unfair, but it should be fair, and family members should understand its importance and benefits to them. Family regulation should be done with love and kindness. Love should be the cornerstone of the family government system, leadership, management and parenting.

Good family rules and regulation are supposed to be empowering and for the benefit and good of family members, e.g., safety, security, good health, learning, wellbeing, growth, togetherness, care and support. They are not supposed to be harsh and disempowering.

Through education, training and regulation, families will be able to transfer rules, morals, culture, values and manners to following generations through their family members.

All family members should be involved in making family rules for ownership and value. In this way they will easily understand, accept and be committed to adhering to the family rules. They will understand their importance and benefits to them. When family members are involved in the formulation of their rules, this will enhance a sense of responsibility for their decisions, actions and behaviour; the same family members should be involved in reviewing the family rules for adjustments or improvements. The following are the simple steps for formulating family rules:

(a)    Identify areas requiring rules (regulation)

(b)    Formulate rules together

(c)    Explain the formulated rules and their benefits for all to understand

(d)    Follow the rules (all)

(e)    Accountability – checks and balances (holding one another accountable)

(f)     Discipline – enhance and promote discipline

(g)    Review the rules when and where necessary
