THE MISUNDERSTOOD ROLE OF WOMEN IN MARRIAGES

“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:15-18)

A. PURPOSE OF MAN IN THE GARDEN

“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it” (Genesis 2:15)

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26-28)

Man was put in the Garden to DRESSS it and KEEP it or to look after it. This was the task that was given to the man. Humankind was to subdue (control/ manage) the whole earth and its affairs. Humankind was to be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth and control/ manage its affairs. Replenish means to replace, restock or refill the earth. This means replacing anything used or taken out like trees. Deforestation is failure of humankind in the mission of replenishing the earth given to humankind.

B. HELP MEET (PARTNER)

“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18)

The woman was made to be a coworker, partner and helpmate to the man in dressing and keeping the Garden of Eden. This means that the man was also a helpmate, partner, coworker to the man in doing this assignment given to humankind by the Almighty. The roles of the Almighty being leadership and management were delegated to the man and woman, respectively. Both man and woman were to subdue and manage the earth and its affairs as well as dress and keep the beautiful Garden of Eden. They were to maintain the trees, manage animals and maintain the beauty of the Garden of Eden on Earth.

The helping role means being a coworker, partner, advisor, and support in the global mission given to humankind. This mission is not limited to the kitchen or child bearing role. It is a global role. This is advisory, supportive and caring and encouraging role. This is helping in leadership and management of the family and affairs of the earth (including communities, towns and countries). She is a coworker.

Limiting the woman to the kitchen and the childbearing role is limiting the woman’s role and lowering it to almost the level of animals which is against the will of the Almighty as the woman is also the image of the Almighty. There is no joy, peace and sustainable development and management of the earth’s affairs in societies that limit women like this in marriages.

C. WHAT HELP MEET (HELP-MATE) DOES NOT MEAN

It does not mean that the woman should pack aside her suggestions, brains, talents, gifts and career in order to be a helper like it has been happening in many marriages where women’s self esteem, confidence, courage and careers have been destroyed. When this happens the real role of a woman cannot be done because she is as good as dead. Hence, humankind fails in the global mission given to them by the Almighty. Limiting women in their role is fighting against the Almighty’s will. Many marriages have become like graveyards where women’s brains, talents, careers, gifts, voices and suggestions are buried or hindered or silenced.
